People, product, process, place: photography

Different photographers will approach briefs in different ways. Sarah comes from a brand, design and B2B marketing background – so for her, photography is a really great way to dive into the creative strategy and use it to evolve the look and feel across touchpoints.

Keeping things fresh and interesting without having to rebrand every three years. Bonus.

Invite them in

Documentary photography is the ideal way to welcome stakeholders into your world: this is what we do, this is how we do it, this is who's at the heart of it. Business decisions are all made by humans, so don't fall into the trap of thinking your people should stay out of your B2B branding. They should be at the centre of it. It's why Sarah loves following teams from lab to landscape to document their work, processes and people.

Make them feel

"Our materials are so tiny, they're really hard to capture" is potentially the best brief Sarah regularly receives from clients. If you're working in materials, macro photography should really be a strong pillar within your brand world. Threads, fibres, nurdles, droplets, textures and minute details, all exploded into life. Details the naked eye can barely register become pin-sharp. If you're looking to add depth and tactility to your marketing materials, embed macro photography into your brand kit. Plus they're usually pretty ace slide backgrounds too.

Make it matter

There's a reason you think of polar bears when you think of global warming. One of the key drivers in climate comms is being able to wrap scientific facts up into stories that other humans connect with. How does this affect other living things on our planet? How will this change the landscapes I used to love? How can I feel inspired to take action? Don’t underestimate the power of field photography to contextualise your work within your unique environment and communities. Use it to add a key storytelling element, while demonstrating concrete impact.

Make it real

How many thousands of pounds would you spend on something you'd never seen, couldn't visualise, and didn't quite fully understand? When it comes to innovations, the sooner you make your offer concrete, the easier it is to move through the buying process – whether that's investors trying to wrap their head around nature credits or customers browsing your newly launched product lines. For items you can see and feel, Sarah usually recommends a studio shoot; the lighting will give you super sharp details and, let's face it, make you look ridiculously professional.
